Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Students attending Laurier must have excellent proficiency in the English language to benefit from university instruction presented in English.

Students who do not meet our English language requirements can choose to pursue an intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program offered by one of our education partners or our Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) program. We’ll provide conditional offers of admission to academically qualified students who are completing an English language certificate program through LEAF.

English Proficiency Requirements

If your first language is not English, you’ll be required to submit acceptable evidence of your English proficiency to our International Recruitment and Admissions office. Normally, evidence of English proficiency is an acceptable score through an accepted testing service. You must make your own arrangements to write the test and have the results forwarded directly to our office.

More information on our English proficiency requirements can be found in our international admissions toolkit.

LEAF: Our Study English Program

Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) is an academic English program for students who meet Laurier’s academic requirements but not Laurier’s English proficiency requirements. Academically qualified applicants who are eligible for levels 3, 4 or 5 of the LEAF program will receive a conditional offer of admission to an academic program and an offer to attend LEAF.

Offered at Laurier’s Brantford campus, students begin their studies in the level that most closely aligns with their English proficiency, according to their most recent IELTS or TOEFL score.

Once you graduate from LEAF, you can go directly into the academic program you received a conditional offer of admission for.
