Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

For Indigenous people, stories are not just entertainment but represent their culture, history and teachings and bring people together as a community. Through stories, each generation can pass along to the next the ideas, history, and values of their culture — from the sacred to the familial, from the tragic to the humorous, from the personal to the national, from the past to the future. From the trees to the birds, everyone and everything has a story.

The Summer Institute of Indigenous Storytelling and Filmmaking offers a one-week program for students to explore how to tell stories — both orally and visually through traditional storytelling and filmmaking practices. The Institute is aimed at Indigenous students in Grades 7 and 8 who want a unique summer experience. Participants live in residence at Laurier, learn about storytelling and filmmaking, and participate in various physical and cultural activities in Waterloo Region.
