Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

We understand that circumstances may prevent you from enrolling for the term specified on your offer of admission. In such cases, a deferral of admission may be granted to you.

Laurier has created pathways for students to defer to the winter 2021 term in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can also request to defer for one full academic year.

Deferring to Winter 2021

To help students navigate the extraordinary circumstances caused by COVID-19, one-term deferrals to winter 2021 may be granted to students who were admitted to the fall 2020 term. The winter term starts in January.

Not all programs are available for winter deferrals due to their progression requirements. For these programs, you cannot begin studying in January because you would not be able to obtain all the necessary prerequisite courses to enrol in subsequent terms.

Winter Deferral Deadline

You must apply to defer by Aug. 1, 2020. We will email you if your deferral request has been approved or denied in early to mid-August. Please note that deferrals are not guaranteed.

Programs That Do Not Permit Winter Deferrals

If you have an offer of admission to one of the following programs, you cannot defer for one term. Instead, you can apply to defer for one full year.

If your program is not found on this list, you can submit the Winter Deferral Request Form.

Deferring Entrance Scholarships and Bursaries

Entrance Scholarships

When you defer for one academic year, entrance scholarships are also deferred. You receive half the value of your entrance scholarship in the fall term and the other half in the winter term. You must be registered in full-time courses in both terms to receive your entrance scholarship.

When you defer to the winter term, you will still receive your winter term installment of the entrance scholarship. To receive the second half, you must register in full-time courses in the spring 2021 term. Please note that you are not required to register in courses in the spring term if you defer to the winter term, but you will not receive the second half of your entrance scholarship.

Entrance Bursaries

Like entrance scholarships, you will receive half your entrance bursary in the winter term. If you enrol in full-time courses in spring 2021, you will receive the second half of your entrance bursary. You must be registered in full-time courses in both terms to receive your entrance bursary.

If you do not receive an entrance bursary, you can apply for the Laurier tuition bursary
