Brantford – In an era defined by “fake news” and unprecedented political spin, what is the purpose of journalism? How are traditional news outlets adapting to a changing media environment? What can we learn from start-up news outlets about how to produce journalism that audiences find meaningful?

These important questions will be explored during a public panel discussion taking place March 6 at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus. Participants include Kathy English, public editor of the Toronto Star, San Grewal, founder of The Pointer, and Erin Millar, founder and CEO of The Discourse. Dan Banko of Banko Media will moderate the discussion.

“Panellists will dive into different business models for journalism in the post-print era and share their views on an important subject: the purpose of reporting news and truth-telling,” said Heidi Northwood, interim senior executive officer at Laurier’s Brantford campus and dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. “It’s a timely and important topic and we’re pleased to invite the community to join us.”

The March 6 panel discussion will take place at the Research and Academic Centre East, Room RCE004, 150 Dalhousie St. in Brantford. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the discussion will take place from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. Please RSVP to Tania Iezzi at tiezzi@wlu.ca by March 1.

The panel discussion is the second event in a Community Speaker Series hosted by Laurier’s Faculty of Liberal Arts Dean’s Community and Alumni Advisory Council. The series aims to engage and connect Laurier with the wider community.
