The following message has been posted on behalf of Deborah MacLatchy, provost and vice-president: academic

Dear faculty and staff,

I am very pleased to announce the re-appointment of Dr. Bruce Arai to the role of Assistant Provost: Strategy for a one-year term, beginning July 1, 2016. In this ongoing role, Bruce will continue to be responsible for developing and enacting strategies for enhancing not-for-credit and for-credit programming at Laurier. He will work closely with deans, faculty members and administrators to expedite program development specifically focused on innovation and revenue enhancement.

As Assistant Provost: Strategy in 2015-16, Bruce was responsible for several important partnership initiatives.  Most prominently, he has worked with deans, faculty members and academic support units to explore options for increased online program development and delivery, including new models to enhance online program marketing and student recruitment.  He has provided advice to academic and administrative units pursuing not-for-credit and for-credit program ideas, participated in development of the Responsibility Centre Management budget model for not-for-credit revenue streams, and served as lead representative in several community initiatives.  Much of this work is in its early stages of development and will benefit from Bruceís continued leadership over the next year to determine the mission fit and sustainability of these initiatives.

The goals for the Assistant Provost: Strategy are framed by the external context for Laurier and by the priorities of the Strategic Academic Plan (2015-2020).  It is essential that we continue to focus on program development that improves and diversifies our high-quality offerings and our student body. To achieve excellence and financial sustainability, we must find new ways to innovate within our core mission of providing exceptional educational programming combined with an outstanding student experience. Continued innovation of this kind will help the university to avoid further expense-cutting, which has the high potential to diminish quality and to hamper our future capacity to act strategically and capitalize on opportunities.

As in 2015-16, Bruce will be on leave from his role as Dean of the Faculty of Human & Social Sciences. Dr. Lauren Eisler has been re-appointed to serve as Acting Dean of the Faculty for 2016-17. An Associate Professor in Criminology, Lauren was previously the Inter-Faculty Associate Dean, Academic Development at the Brantford Campus. During the past year, Lauren successfully shepherded Laurierís first fully online program, the BA in Policing, through its first year, led the development of several new program initiatives in the Faculty, served as the decanal representative on the search committee for the new Dean of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, and has supported enhancement of the Laurier-Conestoga College partnership at the Brantford campus.

Please join me in supporting Bruce and Lauren in their ongoing roles.  Bruce welcomes contact through for those with revenue-generating program ideas they would like to discuss.

Deborah Maclatchy
