SHERM Strategic Priorities 2016 - 2020

SHERMís structure and staffing has been designed to complement Laurierís strategic vision and to meet the defined priorities. New functions and programs have been based on expanding research activities, addition of multi-campus activities and increased engagement of students. Beyond the strategy support, additions for compliance with new and expanding regulations are part of the plan but are of course basic needs for allowing Laurier to execute its mandates and vision. With a focus on customer service and fiscal responsibility, SHERM will continue to be determined to provide the necessary programs in an efficient manner.SHERM is always working towards enhancing both internal and external relationships and partnerships, and is increasing activity in this pursuit.

Our Mission:

To support the Universityís values, vision and mission by integrating and fostering a health and safety oriented culture of leadership, responsibility,legislative accountability and environmental stewardship.

Our Goal:

To manage risks and seek opportunities for continuous improvement by providing expert advice and delivering services that enable the Laurier community to safely achieve the Universityís priorities. SHERM fulfills its mission by working collaboratively and building respectful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Our Guiding Principles:

  1. Develop, promote and implement best practices in loss prevention, mitigation and operational risk management.
  2. Manage the university's overall health and safety program with the goal of preventing occupational injuries and illness.
  3. Develop and implement programs and procedures to meet all of the requirements, duties, and standards set by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Environmental Protection Act.
  4. Create a welcoming environment for all staff, faculty and students regardless of their background or abilities.
The SHERM Strategic Plan 2016 - 2020 was developed to shape the focus and direction of the department.
