    Accessibility at Laurier

Accessibility involves providing barrier free environments and services to enable people of all abilities to fully participate in every aspect of day-to-day life on our campuses. Accessibility actions and initiatives are grounded in the principles of ensuring people with disabilities can learn, live and work at Laurier with independence and dignity, and with a fulsome sense of belonging and inclusion. And we also recognize that accessibility measures benefit our entire campus community, not only those with disabilities.

An accessible Laurier means our campuses are best able to foster engagement from the widest possible range of community members, and in doing so, we build and encourage a talented and diverse workforce and student body. An accessible Laurier means stronger relationships with the communities in which our campuses are situated and a richer culture of diversity and inclusivity. And an accessible Laurier means that everyone has equitable opportunities to achieve academic excellence and take part in a culture that inspires lives of leadership and purpose.

    Our Commitment to Accessibility

    • At Laurier, we value diversity and are committed to providing inclusive, welcoming and affirming learning, living and working environments for all members of our community.
    • We strive to provide barrier-free environments and services that enable all people to fully participate in every aspect of day-to-day campus life.
    • We strive to build campus communities that foster engagement from the widest possible range of participants.
    • We work to create strong relationships with the communities in which our campuses are situated to better reflect and represent their rich and diverse cultures.
    • We aim to provide a barrier-free, equitable and inclusive workplace, focused on the recruitment and retention of a highly qualified and diverse faculty and staff.
    • We aim to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve academic excellence and to take part in a culture that inspires lives of leadership and purpose.

    Access Alternative Formats

Laurier strives to deliver services in a way that is accessible for all individuals. As such, Laurier is happy to provide an alternative communications format upon request at no additional charge.

To do so, contact the original publisher of the document (usually a department administrator), or contact accessibility@wlu.ca.

    Laurier's Accessibility Plan

An essential element of the Integrated Accessibility Standard Regulations, outlined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is the ongoing development, implementation, review and revision of an institutional multi-year accessibility plan.

    The plan servers as:

    • An outline for the strategies we are using to prevent and remove barriers to accessibility on our campuses.
    • A description for how we are meeting our requirements under AODA, as well as the broader accessibility and inclusion goals we set for the university.
    • A useful tool which we can collectively use to evaluate our progress and continuously update our action plans regarding disability inclusion and justice.

    Future Forward Planning

Beginning in early 2026, the employment equity and accessibility officer will lead the work of engaging community members with disabilities, in collaboration with campus accessibility and other equity leaders, to review and update Laurier’s accessibility plan, co-creating a five-year plan to be implemented from 2027-2031.

We also await the release of the final proposed Postsecondary Education Standards from the Ontario government, which will greatly influence the goals and strategies we seek to implement future forward at Laurier.

As such, Laurier created the Bridge Accessibility Plan in 2023 – guiding our work through 2026, while comprehensive consultation and plan creation readies us for 2027.

    Accessibility Timeline

We invite you to review our annual accomplishments documenting results in progress towards achieving our plans in our accessibility timeline.

    Compliance Reporting

Reporting on our compliance with AODA is required every two years. As of 2025 (a reporting year), the Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility requires that the compliance report – as submitted – be publicly available on our website.

    Your Feedback and Involvement

Integral to our continued accessibility work is our ongoing goal of Laurier being an environment in which the channels for communicating feedback about accessibility are always open, and where such concerns are addressed in a timely manner, and in a way that respects the dignity and independence of all people.

If you are interested in learning more about Laurier’s accessibility planning, and/or have feedback about how the university provides goods, services and/or facilities to persons with disabilities, please contact Employment Equity and Accessibility at accessibility@wlu.ca who will then direct to campus partners as relevant.

Feedback regarding accessibility-related issues can also always be directed to the department offering the goods, services or facilities.
