I received my PhD in English Literature in 1998 and my MA in English Literature in 1990, both from York University in Toronto.
Prior to joining Laurier in 2004, I taught courses in Romantic literature, children’s literature, and children’s studies at York University.
Since 2004 I have been actively engaged in program development at the Brantford campus, and played an integral role in the establishment of the Youth and Children’s Studies program.
My educational background is in English literature, and my doctoral research focused on women writers of the Romantic period who used the novel form as a way of disseminating conservative propaganda against the French Revolution. This work led to a more recent focus on the Evangelical novel as an 18th-century literary form. The ways in which 18th-century women writers engaged in political activity informs my current research project, which looks at the intersection of gender, age, and activism in 21st-century Canada. My research and teaching in children’s culture have led to research into 18th-century didactic fiction for youth, as well as 21st-century children’s literature and media.
