Join a Laurier Ensemble

How Laurier non-music students and UWaterloo students can join an ensemble:

Laurier ensembles are an integral component to the performance and cultural experience valuing: community, diversity and inclusivity, safe and welcoming environments, development of the whole person, life goals and interests, and academic excellence. Membership in Laurier ensembles is by audition and is open to any Laurier student regardless of major- everyone is welcome. Fill in this form for more details.

Ensembles:

  • Symphony Orchestra: An orchestra for strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion that performs works from the symphonic repertoire.
  • Concert Choir: A mixed voice (SATB) choir that sings a variety of music from the classical canon, Canadian compositions, and other contemporary choral music.
  • ICE/Convergence: This ensemble improvises and creates music with guest artists from different traditions and art forms.
  • Jazz Orchestra: A big band that performs jazz standards and contemporary arrangements.
  • Laurier Singers: An 18-24 mixed voice (SATB) choir that focuses on choral chamber music.
  • Vox Experimental: This ensemble is a show choir that sings and performs pop, rock, jazz, and music theatre songs with bands and some dancing, and welcomes singers and instrumentalists.
  • Wind Orchestra: A symphonic band for woodwinds, brass, and percussion that plays a wide range of repertoire from classical to modern.

These ensembles rehearse weekly preparing performances to share musical gifts and talents with the community for the fall and winter terms. Ensembles are full-year (Fall/Winter) courses and students must commit to the entire course and all performances to earn the 0.5 credit.
 
The Faculty of Music offers undergraduate and graduate credit/cross-registration for performing in an ensemble. Please consider the opportunity of becoming a member in our ensembles. We would love to make music with you!

Audition Process Overview:

  • Contact Alyssa Chong and share of your interest to receive further information.
  • Complete an application form and select an audition time.
  • Prepare audition excerpts.
  • Await ensemble placement confirmation.
    • Register for the correct ensemble section for both the fall and winter terms.

Auditions will take place during Orientation week, from September 4th to 5th. You will be required to have an instrument to audition, but if you don’t have one, don’t worry! We can help you find out how to rent an instrument locally.
