Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Laurier is committed to assisting applicants whose ability to take an English proficiency test has been impacted due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

That's why we created the opportunity for incoming students to take the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Computer Edition (CE) test in person at Laurier in August 2020.

Note: This webpage is continuously being updated as new details become available. Please continue to check back frequently.

Who is Eligible to Take the CAEL CE at Laurier?

You're eligible to take CAEL CE at Laurier if you have received an offer of admission with an English proficiency condition. Your offer letter will state if your offer has an English proficiency condition. You must accept your offer to attend Laurier in order to take the test.

You should check your official offer letter in LORIS for all conditions listed.

What Does an English Proficiency Condition Mean?

An English proficiency condition allows us to give you an offer of admission before you meet Laurier's English proficiency requirement. You must provide evidence of your English proficiency by Aug. 15, 2020. This deadline is extended if you register for and take CAEL CE at Laurier.

Meet Your English Proficiency Condition With CAEL

Laurier's required score for CAEL CE is:

  • 70 overall;
  • 60 in each band.

If your score meets Laurier's minimum requirement for CAEL CE, you have met the requirements for your English proficiency condition and you can begin studying in your academic program full time in September.

If your score is below the minimum requirement, you will begin studying in the Laurier English and Academic Foundation (LEAF) program in September. The LEAF program is offered at our Brantford campus.

Once you complete level 5 of the LEAF program, you have met Laurier's English proficiency requirement and can begin studying in your academic program full time.
