WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University has signed an agreement with the University of Sussex in England to offer students an opportunity to earn an Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Laurier and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Sussex. The agreement — which is exclusive to Laurier and one of the first of its kind for a Canadian university — condenses the time required to earn both an Honours BA and LLB to six years rather than the typical seven years.
The program is designed so that students spend the first two years in one of four Laurier BA programs: Criminology, Human Rights and Human Diversity, or Law and Society on the Brantford campus, or Political Science on Laurier’s Waterloo campus. Students who meet the GPA and eligibility requirements at Laurier may apply to the University of Sussex and are guaranteed an offer of admission to the Sussex Law School providing they meet the entrance requirements of the University of Sussex; there is no requirement to write the LSAT entrance exam. Students then travel to Brighton, England, for three years of study to complete the LLB requirements at the University of Sussex. In order to complete their Laurier Honours BA, students would need to return for one final year at Laurier’s Waterloo or Brantford campus. This final year at Laurier will provide an enriched program to assist students in preparing to write Canada’s national law accreditation exams for a Certificate of Qualification.
“We are very excited about this new affiliation,” said Deborah MacLatchy, Laurier’s vice-president: academic and provost. “The University of Sussex has an outstanding law program that is already home to many Canadian students. This is a tremendous opportunity for students to build a professional credential and international experience into their studies at Laurier.”
This innovative program allows Laurier students to receive degrees from two excellent universities while experiencing international travel and an opportunity to live, study and become immersed in another culture. It further enhances Laurier’s commitment to global citizenship and justice by encouraging students to combine a career choice with an opportunity for study abroad and immerse themselves in the life of another country.
