Wilfrid Laurier University’s Junior University Multidisciplinary Program (JUMP) hosted more than 1,700 students in Grade 5 to Grade 8 at the university’s Waterloo campus during May and June.
JUMP allows students to experience university life and introduces them to post-secondary education. Students from 36 elementary schools and one homeschool group participated in JUMP, mini-JUMP or day JUMP.
“JUMP creates an environment that allows students to thrive and encourages them to think about future decisions and careers they could one day have,” said Emily Poole, JUMP coordinator. “It’s an amazing opportunity for all students to step out of their comfort zone and gain a greater understanding of subjects that are both familiar and new to them.”
While attending the camp, students live in residence, eat in the dining hall and attend classes led by professors. Classes touch on topics including astronomy, athletics, archaeology, science, music, theatre, business and psychology. Recently, the program launched a communications and media class held in one of Laurier’s active learning classrooms, where students had the chance to engage in the course through group work and interactive technology.
The JUMP camp also welcomed classes from the JumpStart to Higher Education program. Laurier’s JumpStart program brings resources and information about university to elementary school students in high-risk areas. Participating classes have the opportunity to win a scholarship to attend the JUMP camp or the mini-camp. This is the third year classes from the JumpStart program attended JUMP.
JUMP is led by Laurier Conference Services and is currently in its 22nd year. Several other Laurier departments work to ensure the success of the program, including Food Services, Special Constable Service, the Laurier Bookstore, Department of Athletics, Department of Residence, Bookings Office, The Turret Nightclub and Wilf's Restaurant.
